Saint Vincent and the Grenadines a part of the British West Indies, and is usually simply referred to as St. Vincent. Its 150 sq. miles of territory consist of the main island of St. Vincent and the northern Grenadines, which is a chain comprised of 32 smaller islands. Of these, Bequia, Mustique, Union Island, Canouan, Palm Island, Mayreau, and Young Island are inhabited, while the others are not. Most of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines lies within the Hurricane Alley. Kingstown, not to be confused with Kingston, Jamaica, is located on St. Vincent and serves as the capital and main port of the islands.
St. Vincent is volcanic and covered in forests, with very little level ground. The windward side is mostly rocky and the leeward side has sandy beaches. The agricultural industry, specifically banana production, is important to the islands’ economy. Tourism also plays a role in bringing revenue into the country. English is the official language and the culture has been influenced by the English and by the country’s predominantly African ancestors.
